UROOJ MEMON
Maker and teacher based in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
My journey into textile art did not begin with a needle and thread, but with a quiet desire to learn how to sew. It was during my time at The Sewing Cafe, as I fell in love with quilting, that something began to shift. What I was truly seeking was not just a craft, but a sense of stillness—a way to soften the noise of my thoughts, the overwhelm, and the deeper weight I carried within.
In a world shaped by screens, speed, and constant noise, I found myself longing for something quieter. Our days are filled with endless notifications, instant results, and the disposability of fast fashion. I needed an antidote to all of it. That is when I discovered Sashiko.
In the gentle rhythm of that first hand-stitched line, I found my Zen.
During a deeply challenging season of my life, hand stitching became my anchor. Whether I was hand piecing a new quilt design, practicing Sashiko, or settling into the quiet repetition of hand quilting, the simple act of pulling a needle through fabric created space—to pause, to breathe, to return to a sense of steadiness, and to appreciate the process of making.
In those moments, stitching became more than a practice. It became a way to process, to soften, and to find clarity when everything else felt uncertain. It allowed me to reclaim my time from the distractions and place it back into my own hands.

I founded The Running Stitch Studio to share that sense of sanctuary with you. At the heart of my work is a belief in simplicity—that you do not need a hundred complicated techniques or a mountain of expensive tools to create something beautiful and meaningful.
The running stitch, in its quiet simplicity, is one of the most enduring stitches across time—present in traditions of hand quilting, in couture, and in the very foundations of machine sewing. It is both a beginning and a return.
Sometimes, all you need is one stitch, a few thoughtfully chosen materials, and the willingness to slow down. Within that simplicity lies a quiet strength—the ability to create, to connect, and to find a sense of calm through the rhythm of making.
That is why I have curated my shop with intention, offering only the essential needles, threads, and fabrics I use in my own studio and in my classes. By stripping away the excess, I hope to help you find your own rhythm, confidence, and resilience through stitching.
Alongside this approach is a longstanding fascination with fabric. Having traveled extensively, I have long been drawn to the textiles I encounter across different cultures. Wherever I go, I find myself noticing the details—the cloth, the craftsmanship, the quiet presence of fabric within everyday life.
Today, I intentionally source unique pieces from different parts of the world, guided by those experiences. Within the shop, you will find thoughtfully selected handcrafted pieces—each carrying its own story and journey—alongside carefully sourced deadstock fabrics from global suppliers, chosen for their quality and purpose.
Beyond this digital space, I teach Sashiko, Kawandi Quilting, English Paper Piecing, and Visible Mending at The Sewing Cafe.
Through my teaching, I am deeply committed to sharing the meditative practice of slow stitching—creating a space where you can pause, reconnect, and discover your own rhythm and resilience through the quiet act of making.
Let’s slow down, one stitch at a time.
