Marti Michell Double Wedding Ring by Karen Bond

It was at your store that I got inspired to start quilting and it was there that I bought the Marti Michell Double Wedding Ring templates. I ended up buying my fabric at a store in Toronto, but I wanted to show you the final product.  I used the long arm quilter because I wanted the entire thing made by me as it's for my best friend who is getting married this summer.  I'm giving it to her next weekend.  I wanted also to say thank you for all your help every time I come in.

Greetings from Nova Scotia! I am happy to introduce my daughter, Eleanor, and to show off her baby quilt, which I made with my collection of 1930's reproduction fat quarters, most of them purchased at the Running Stitch before my move.

This is the easiest quilt I have made, but there's nothing wrong with simplicity when you have very little spare time. This was also my first experience with machine quilting... I love my Bernina! We are very happy in Halifax, but I do miss my favourite quilt shop and wish the Running Stitch was just a quick drive away!

Melinda Platt, first quilt ever. How fantastic is that??? I salute you Melinda ...

Melinda Platt, first quilt ever - Held up in living room horizontally

My friend Lee Ming announced her engagement last July. She was one of my oldest friends; we've known each other since we were twelve. The man she was marrying was a friend from high school, so we'd all known each other for a pretty long time and had been waiting for a while for them to finally get married. I wanted to do something special for her and thought a handmade gift would be nice. I'd never made a quilt before, but I knew it was a pretty traditional gift (maybe not for a Buddhist, but I thought she'd appreciate it anyway). My mum had just bought the French Braid quilt book and I really liked it so I decided to use that pattern. We visited the Running Stitch in February and Michele helped me pick out my fabrics and calculate yardages. I had no idea what I was doing. I used the End-In French Braid version in the book, scaled up to a queen size, and used earth tone fabrics to try to make it a little more "macho", since it was partly for a guy. It took a long time. I had no idea when I started what a big job it was! By September I had the top done, got the backing, and was ready to hand it off to a friend of my mum's, Theresa Cody, for quilting. We decided on an all-over viney stitch which we thought echoed the quasi-paisley pattern of the border rather well. She did a great job in a very short time and had it ready for me by early October. I spent all Thanksgiving weekend with it over my lap doing the binding, then a solid half-day de-hairing it from all the cat and Golden Retriever hair that had found its way onto the quilt.

My friends were married on October 17. A couple days later I got an e-mail from my friend saying that she had cried when she opened the quilt, she just loved it and really appreciated the thoughtfulness of it and the time and work involved. So I think it was well received :)
